Gynecomastia

Gynecomastia is a common finding among men with loose hanging skin and excess fat in their chest area which can be difficult to improve even with exercise. Our surgeons use several techniques to help you attain an athletic and masculine appearance to your chest.

Gynecomastia is a fairly common, but rarely talked about, condition of enlarged male breasts. Overdeveloped male breasts can rarely be associated with specific medications, drugs, and other medical problems. More often gynecomastia is caused by excess adipose (fat), glandular breast tissue, and loose hanging skin without underlying medical problems. During your consultation your surgeon will recommend the best procedure after comprehensive evaluation of your history and exam.

Types of Procedure

Liposuction

Removal of excess glandular and fatty tissue can be performed through small incisions via liposuction. This may be combined with other techniques.

Subareolar tissue excision

Prominence of the nipple areolar complex can be due to stubborn glandular tissue below the center of the breast. An small camouflaged incision within the areola is made and any extra glandular tissue underneath the areola can be directly excised to reduce nipple areolar projection and volume.

Direct excision with nipple preservation

This procedure involves excision of the excess glandular/fatty tissue and skin, while preserving the nipple areolar complex. A new location for the nipple areolar complex is then created.

Double incision mastectomy with free nipple grafting

With larger gynecomastia and skin stretching, the removal of glandular/fatty tissue is performed using a mastectomy approach leaving a transverse incision along the chest fold. The nipple is removed and grafted over an area on the chest where the “new” nipple location would belong.

Common Questions

What is Gynecomastia? Gynecomastia is a condition characterized by the enlargement of breast tissue in males. It can occur due to hormonal imbalances, certain medications, or underlying health conditions. Gynecomastia can affect one or both breasts and may result in tenderness or swelling.

How is Gynecomastia treated? Treatment for gynecomastia depends on the underlying cause and the severity of the condition. In some cases, lifestyle changes such as weight loss or stopping certain medications may help. Surgical options, such as liposuction or mastectomy, may be recommended for more severe cases.
