Preserving Breast Sensation

PRESERVING BREAST SENSATION

Achieving a More Natural & Comfortable Result

We prioritize advanced techniques that help preserve or restore sensation in the nipple area after reconstruction.

Routinely during mastectomies, nerves providing feeling to the breast are severed causing loss of sensation and numbness to the breast and nipple.

Patients may lose all or some degree of sensation to the breast, regardless of whether they choose to have breast reconstruction. Over time, some sensation may return but can remain variable from patient to patient. Our plastic surgeons can discuss novel sensory recovery strategies with you at the time of your reconstruction.

Restoring Sensation with Implant Reconstruction

Our surgeons are able to identify and repair severed nerves at the time of your mastectomy using nerve grafts. The nerve repair is performed using microsurgical techniques and advanced training. By re-establishing continuity of the transected nerves, our surgeons can help improve and maximize sensation of the breast and nipple.

Restoring Sensation with Flap Reconstruction

During your flap reconstruction procedure, our surgeons reconnect the sensory nerves responsible for providing feeling to your breast, ultimately restoring a sense of wholeness after breast cancer surgery.

When breast reconstruction is performed using flaps, like the DIEP flap, sensory nerves from the flap are re-connected to cut nerves in the breast at the time of mastectomy. This requires the use of an operating microscope. This extra step provides patients with a better chance of regaining sensation to the new breast, in a shorter amount of time.

Common Questions

How likely am I to retain or regain breast sensation after reconstruction?: Preserving or restoring breast sensation is a complex aspect of reconstruction and varies among individuals. Factors such as the chosen reconstruction method, timing, and surgical techniques play a crucial role.

What can I do to improve the chances of preserving breast sensation?: Collaborating closely with your surgeon is essential. Discuss your concerns, explore available options, and understand the impact of factors like reconstruction type and timing on breast sensation.
